Heizer directed important field work in the Sacramento Valley of California, near Lovelock, Nevada, and the Mayan sites of La Venta, Tabasco, Mexico and Abaj Takalik, Guatemala. He published more than 500 books and articles concerning archaeology and anthropology. He served as an expert witness in the Indian land claims cases Clyde F. Thompson et. al. v. United States, Docket No. 31, and Ernest Risling et. al. v. United States, Docket No. 37.

Royal Ervin "Erv" Taylor was an anthropologist and archaeologist who was a professor at the University of California, Riverside, Department of Anthropology from 1970 until his death in 2019. He was particularly known for his work running a radiocarbon dating lab at UCR. Robert F. Heizer was born in Colorado. He received his B.A. (1936) and Ph. D. (1941) degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught in Oregon (1940-1941) and California (1945-1976).
